The turkey has been maligned for far too long. Yes, it frequently crosses heavily traveled roads at the wrong time, it sleeps in trees, and legend used to have it that when it rains, turkeys look up at the sky and the water fills their throats and they drown. But that description fits some hashers, too, so let’s give our real national bird a break. Turkeys are actually very affectionate, smart birds, and they’re fast, too: They’ve been spotted moving along the ground at speeds up to thirty miles an hour. “Turkey” trail? Pfft.

Enough turkeys will be eaten next Thursday – we’re going to celebrate them on Saturday, if only for a day.

This Saturday, we’re honoring the turkey with a shiggy-filled trail in the semi-wilds of Morgan-Monroe State Forest, starting from the Bryant Creek Lake parking lot off the Forest Road at 3 p.m. Your hares will be Mother “Wattle” Shucker and White “Snood” Lightning, and it’ll cost you $6 (cheep) if you’ve been to a hash before, and it’ll be free if you haven’t.

And there will be turkey trails. Many turkey trails. And beer. Count on it.

Note: It’s deer hunting season, so you’ll probably want to leave the antlers and the reindeer costume for Jingle Balls.
